Evidence-based Science ... an introduction to reality

Professor Albert W. Burgstahler said it well: "Throughout history, officially-promoted viewpoints in science have often held sway for remarkably long periods of time. A familiar example is the Ptolemaic geocentric view of our solar system, which was shown to be incorrect but was nevertheless stoutly defended by ruling ecclesiastical authority.

"Surprising as it may seem, a similar situation prevails in science policy even today. For over fifty years the United States Public Health Service, with the endorsement of leading national and international dental and other professional organizations, has insisted that the levels of fluoride ingested from water fluoridation not only significantly reduce tooth decay but are also virtually without any toxic effects other than mild dental mottling. This view, however, like that of Ptolemy, contradicts available scientific evidence." Authoritarianism Versus Scientific Evidence, FLUORIDE, Vol. 31 No. 3 August 1998.

As stated by the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario, "[The] incidence of all forms of Fluorosis is now steeply on the rise in the Western World and is recognized as a major threat to public and ecosystem health in the Developing World. Dentists are devoting more of their treatment time to Dental Fluorosis, and doctors are seeing increasing numbers of patients suffering from what may be Skeletal and/or Systemic Fluorosis. ... Children are worth special mention with respect to Fluorosis. With less body mass and decreased overall metabolic capacity, they are particularly susceptible to Fluoride toxicity as they undergo critical stages of rapid cell reproduction and differentiation. UNICEF attributes Fluorosis in 20 mostly Developing World countries around the globe to toxic amounts of Fluoride, primarily in drinking water. The United Nations acknowledges Fluorosis as a major threat to public health in those demographically 'youth-full' countries where the majority of the world's population lives."

"Though apparently vague and non-specific, most of the symptoms of Fluoride toxicity point towards some kind of profound metabolic dysfunction, and are strikingly similar to the symptoms of Hypothyroidism.

"... Humans appear to vary considerably with respect to their susceptibility to Fluorosis. As a general guideline, prolonged total Fluoride intake exceeding 1.0 mg/day can produce clinical signs of Fluorosis in adults."

There are no developed "non-fluoridated" areas today. Even in Grenada it can be difficult to find local fruits and vegetables that haven't been contaminated with fluoride from modern agricultural chemicals. Products imported from other countries, such as ordinary black or green tea; breakfast cereals; processed pork, beef, and chicken; grape or vegetable juice, wines, etc.; are almost certain to provide significant quantities of fluoride, as will fluoride toothpaste and "natural" mineral supplements.

Water fluoridation - whether natural or artificial - doesn't work and isn't safe. From the start, its promotion relied on fraudulent abstracts prepared by special interests concerned with economic and national security issues. It had nothing to do with improving dental health. During the 1970s, when I showed Michigan's top fluoride expert several dozen examples of his own industry funded abstracts side by side with the original documents they were supposed to represent, he said: "Look, lady, if the abstracts don't agree with the originals, there must be something wrong with the originals." In 1978 Michigan became the first state to repeal a mandatory fluoridation law.

In 1997 the NAS/NRC Institute of Medicine published fraudulent new guidelines for the adequate and tolerable daily intake of fluoride. This too was accomplished by industry-funded special interests willing to misrepresent their own scientific references. The evidence can be found in hundreds of university libraries.

More recently, in March 2006 NAS/NRC published their review of EPA's regulations for fluoride in drinking water. Although this document contradicts the notion that fluoride prevents tooth decay without any toxic effects other than mild dental fluorosis, it does not apply to "optimally" fluoridated water, and is not accurate with regard to current daily dosage from sources other than drinking water.

Excerpts from hundreds of scientific articles, reviews, abstracts, books, and other media have been selected, organized, and linked to their source - to help make sense of the contrast between the pro- and the anti-fluoridation point of view.
